September 2026 Fire Report: Trends, Risks and Progress

I tracked 49 fires at waste and recycling facilities in August 2026, tying August 2025 for the highest August total in the 10 years I have been compiling this data. That brings the year-to-date count to 293 fires, the third-highest January-August total on record, behind the 300 logged during the same period in both 2024 and 2025.
